Interview w/Charlie Holmberg + Giveaways!

I'm excited to welcome, Charlie Holmberg  First things first! That cover. It makes my visual-loving heart happy. The diagrams, the flow of the dress, the font(I could stare at that 'the' 4evah), and the way the font fits just so into the dress. Yeah. I love it. Now where was I? Oh, yes!

I'm excited to welcome, Charlie Holmber to the blog today! =)

1. While writing TPM, did you attempt any paper magic of your own? Origami, paper cutting, strange rituals at midnight...?

Ha! Unfortunately nothing I fold actually works. ;) I know a small amount of origami and paper weirdness, all of which I used in the book (well, one is in the sequel, The Glass Magician. It’s a weird jellyfish thing I learned how to do in elementary school). Anytime I go into detail about how a spell is done, you know I’ve actually created it at some point in my life. (None at midnight, mind you.)

And yes, the book has paper airplanes. (Well, “gliders,” since airplanes haven’t been invented yet.)

2. If you could wear only one color for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oh gosh. My first instinct is pink because it’s my favorite, but I’d probably wear black. People would think I have a dark soul and I’d always look skinny.

3. Besides your main character, which character in TPM is dearest to your heart?

Definitely the male lead! I may or may not be secretly in love with him. That’s a good thing, right? Emery Thane can teach me magic any day.

4. Snack attack-- what do you grab?

Chocolate chips!

5. When writing, what sort of scenes do you enjoy crafting the most-- action, romance, witty dialogue?

I’d have to say “reveal” scenes—any scene where I get to showcase a secret. I tend to get the most excited for those and look forward to them weeks in advance. I love witty dialogue, but I feel like my characters tend to be wittier than me, and that’s stressful. I definitely like reading romantic scenes the most, but it takes me years to write them because I nitpick every movement and word.

6. What is one of your fav lines from THE PAPER MAGICIAN?

Hmm… the first that came to mind was, “I have a personal motto to never Fold on one’s lap.”

Homegrown in Salt Lake City, Charlie was raised a Trekkie with three sisters who also have boy names. She writes fantasy novels and does freelance editing on the side. She's a proud BYU alumna, plays the ukulele, and owns too many pairs of glasses.

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

  7. I've been waiting very patiently for this novel to be released. It's almost here. I think if I could only wear one color all the time it would be dark green (although that would be a bit odd for pants).
