Author Stop: Helen Scheuerer

1. Besides your main character, what character in Heart of Mist is nearest and dearest to your heart?

Ohhhh I love this question. I actually have a major crush on one of the secondary characters, Fiore (or Fi, as his friends call him). He comes from a neighbouring continent in the realm and has a real cheeky side to him that I love. I can’t really tell you much more about him without giving away some spoilers, but he’s definitely one of my favourites!

2. What is your #1 tourist recommendation for people who visit your home city of Sydney, Australia?

If I’ve got friends visiting from abroad, I always like to take them to Circular Quay - where the Opera House is. There’s also a great little rooftop pub in The Rocks called The Glenmore, where you can have a beer in the sun and overlook the harbour.

3. You're the founder of Writer's Edit, an online resource for writers. How did that site evolve?

Writer’s Edit started as a result of me wanting to test the waters before starting a small press. The site started as a blog for writers and grew pretty quickly from there. Within a year, we’d published our first book (a creative writing anthology called Kindling), and also started offering editorial services to writers.

Since then, we’ve published not one but three volumes of Kindling and have recently launched a fantasy fiction imprint, Talem Press. We’ve been working super hard behind the scenes and later this year, we’ll be offering extensive writing courses for both fiction and freelance writers :)

4. Plot twist: Let's play a game! Reach into your purse (tote, briefcase, etc): What are the first 3 things you pull out?

Kindle. Notepad. Umbrella.

These days I really don’t go anywhere without those three things. I work at a hot desk in the city, and so I’m always trying to be productive on the commute. I also tend to do a lot of walking, and there’s nothing worse than being caught out in the rain!

5. You had a book launch party for Kindling, a Writer's Edit anthology. What was the best part about that event?

We’ve actually had three book launches now - one for each Kindling anthology. The best part is always the same for me - seeing all our authors come together and celebrate what they’ve accomplished with us. Our authors (and our editors) come from all over Australia (and the world!) and so it’s always amazing having most of them all in the one place and putting faces to names.

We’ve also had some killer book cupcakes at our launch parties!

6. What is a favorite line(s) in Heart of Mist?

Great question! Well there’s a scene early on where one of the secondary characters says to the protagonist, “we have to play to the strengths we’re given, least at first” - it’s a small moment, but I think it sets up a lot of things to come.

In a realm where toxic mist sweeps the lands and magic is forbidden, all Bleak wants is a cure for her power.

Still grieving the death of her guardian, still trying to suppress her magic and dangerously self-medicating with alcohol, Bleak is snatched from her home by the commander of the king’s army, and summoned to the capital.

But the king isn’t the only one interested in Bleak’s powers.

The leader of an infamous society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, lays claim to her as well, and Bleak finds herself in the middle of a much bigger battle than she anticipated…

Heart of Mist is the gripping first book in The Oremere Chronicles, a fantasy series of epic proportions.

THIS LIFE ISN'T MINE Cover Reveal

Blurb: Most nights, when I close my eyes, my dreams are filled with memories from my past life, the one I lived before this. I remember who I was and the people in that life, and I don't want any part of this one. Everly Hope Davis isn't who I want to be, but she's who I am. In the beginning I fought against her and everything in her world, but it's impossible to hate something when you're living it every day, when the people involved make it a life worth living. I'm trying to make the best of it now, but deep down I know this life isn't mine.

Updates

My poor blog, it's so neglected lately. I saw my last post was in June, and decided to rectify that. So here's me, posting! About...Oh, heck. Lots of random things.

Even though I'm not pregnant, I've been having fun planning baby shower boards on Pinterest. I've decided if we do have another one, & it's a boy, I want to do a circus-themed baby shower. I love the bright colors I've picked (red, turquoise, & orange), and for desserts, I'd do cupcakes with animal cracker toppers, cotton candy in paper cones, white chocolate popcorn, & mini caramel apples.

And if it doesn't happen as a baby shower, I can always do it for the kidlet's birthday party one year. He usually wants a cartoon-character themed bday party, but if I read him enough circus books, and use my motherly persuasion, I think I could bring him around. ;)

I am going to start painting our house soon. It's all flat paint right now, and so scuffed and dingy that it's driving me crazy. I've also decided to paint the ceilings (shoot me!), which should be a learning curve, because I've never painted a ceiling in my life. #arghgroan

I am still in the midst of revisions. I'll be amazed if I'm done by the end of the year with them. It is such a twisted up hot mess right now. But that's okay. I'll get there eventually, said the Little Engine that could.

(source)

I just put this book on hold at the library, Final Girls. I'm not a huge thriller/horror fan, but I read the sample online & it really hooked me. I think it's the combo of this woman having a gory past, but now she bakes. I like the juxtaposition of those two things together. Once covered in blood? Now you're covered in frosting! (Read the sample on Amazon, and you'll see what I mean.)

Happy Thursday everyone! We're one day away from the weekend...

IWSG: I've Became That Blogger

The IWSG is a community where writers can share their fears and insecurities about the writing life. To learn more, check out their website here.

When I first started blogging four years ago, it used to annoy me when I'd find a new blog to visit, and discover it wasn't active. The last post was from months ago (or longer). What was the point of having a blog if you weren't going to be active on it? I'd smugly go on my way, secure in my postings of two or more a week.

And now...I'm that blogger. I only posted once last month, my ISWG post. But I've found I don't have much to say anymore. There's nothing more I can say about writing that I haven't said already. I'm keeping at it, writing new stories, revising them, querying, and starting the process over again for each new book.

I still support authors when I can, but my author interviews are few and far between. I find I just don't have the time to go hunting for authors to visit the blog. My time seems less than when it did when I first started blogging. Now, if I'm going to sit up late on the computer, it's going to be for writing, and not formatting a post.

So my smugness has come back around to bite me in the butt. I now get that blogging comes and goes, and that a neglected blog doesn't mean you're a social media failure. It just means you're busy living life and pursuing other interests-- which is never a bad thing.

Maybe I'll get back around to being a more active blogger. Maybe I won't. Either one is just fine.

IWSG: What If I'm Never Good Enough?

The IWSG is a community where writers can share their fears and insecurities about the writing life. To learn more, check out their website here.

I'm in the process of revising the best book I've ever written so far (at least I think so, my critique partners haven't weighed in yet, lol). My hopes for this book are high, and I think if I'm ever going to get my foot in the door, it will be with this one.

But I can't help but worry that no matter how much I work to better my craft, or years that I pour into this passion, I'll always fall just short. That the requests will always then end up being a no, and I'll never be agented.

Then I worry that if I ever do get that magical creature, I'll be doomed to never sell. How disheartening would it be to complete one of the steps, but then never be able to cross that final hurdle?

I'll also admit, I've been writing for nine years, and the question of how much longer will it be before I get my break, is one that I often ruminate on. So these are just worries that plague me at times. You know, the 'but am I truly good enough' variety you throw out there into the universe. =)

But despite all the doom & gloom of the above, I'm quite happy w/how my writing is going at the moment. I've started getting up in the morning, and this new routine is working quite well for me. I can really focus, and I look forward to writing now. And the cup of hot vanilla tea with seven spoonfuls of sugar I make every morning...

Author Stop: Jessie Sima

1. Kelp is beyond adorable! Has he changed any from when you first envisioned him, or is the Kelp we see now, the same Kelp that galloped into your imagination from the beginning?

When I first imagined Kelp, he was just a nameless unicorn who lived with narwhals. He was always small and stubby, and he always had a helmet, but the original version went all the way around his horn. Eventually I realized that it made more sense for his horn to just pop through!

Early in the writing process there was a whole back story where Kelp was dropped into the ocean by a stork and was adopted by a narwhal couple. After many drafts, I realized that all of that wasn’t necessary, and I enjoyed the ambiguity of him just being born in the ocean somehow.

2. What is a food that unicorns detest?

Unicorns have very sensitive tastebuds that can taste colors. They prefer to eat colorful, flavorful foods and don’t really enjoy dull, bland cuisine. Here are some examples of food you should not offer a unicorn:
-Mashed potatoes
-Oatmeal
-Cauliflower
-Vanilla ice cream
-Rice cakes
-Parsnips

3. What medium do you use to create your illustrations?

I make all of my illustrations digitally using Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom drawing tablet.

4. If a narwhal could become a land animal for a day, where would it visit?

Stonehenge. They’ve heard a lot of speculation about what the stones mean, and the narwhals think they might know the truth.

5. Are there any other mythical creatures you would like to tell a story about? (for the sake of unicorn privacy, I'm just pretending they don't exist..sshh!)

What mythological creature wouldn’t I like to tell a story about?! One creature that I’d love to write about - but that I can’t figure out how to make work - is the majestic centaur! They’re such interesting creatures, and I wonder what kind of mischief some modern day centaurs could get into.

6. What is a favorite line(s) from Not Quite Narwhal?

One of my favorite lines is, “They took it quite well.”
To give some spoiler-free context, “they” refers to the Narwhals that Kelp grew up with, and “it” refers to a bit of news that Kelp shares with them. This line sums up the conversation in a way that makes me laugh.

Jessie Sima is an author/illustrator living and working in New York City.

She grew up in a small town in Southern New Jersey, unaware that she was a storyteller. Once she figured it out, she told her family and friends. They took it quite well.

Not Quite Narwhal (Simon & Schuster BFYR) is Jessie's debut picture book.

Kelp doesn't mind being a little different from the other narwhals. But when a strong current carries him away, Kelp encounters some mysterious, sparkling creatures who leave him wondering if maybe he isn't a narwhal at all.

Join Kelp on his journey across land and sea as he tries to figure out where he belongs, and what it means for him to be not quite narwhal.

And just for fun, the kidlet and I 'made' and decorated unicorn horns!

Lastly, if you're as enamored by Kelp as I am, then definitely check out NotQuiteNarwhal.com. You can take a quiz to find out if you're a sea unicorn or a land narwhal, print out coloring pages, or download an activity kit. Lots of good stuff!!

FORGOTTEN Release Day: Excerpt, Guest Post, & Giveaway!

GUEST POST by Kristin Smith:
THE DECEPTION GAME Series Dream Cast of Actors

I've had many fans and readers ask me, after reading CATALYST, if I think the book will be made into a movie. My answer is always something like this:

I'm sure every author dreams of their book making it to the big screen. I mean, who wouldn't want to see their characters come to life like that? But with that thought comes the question: Who would play my main characters?

Well, I've thought about it, and today I'm going to share with you MY dream cast of actors for THE DECEPTION GAME series. You ready for this? :)

1) Sienna: Her personality matches her hair. Fiery. She's strong, sassy, and defiant, and rides an antique Harley she found and restored after her father's death. Although she would disagree, Sienna is naturally beautiful, even if she's the only one of her female peers who isn't genetically modified. I picture Emma Stone as Sienna.

2) Zane: He's the genetically modified poster boy for Chromo 120, his father's genetic modification company. He's kind, thoughtful, and an all-around good guy. It's no wonder Sienna is drawn to him, despite the fact that he has been betrothed since birth to his perfect genetic match. With his strong jaw and hair-you-just-want-to-run-your-hands-through, Alex Pettyfer would be my choice for Zane.

3) Trey: He's the leader of an extremist group called the Fringe, and he's a bit of a bad boy. However, his reputation is misleading. He's strong, loyal, and intelligent, and will do anything to protect those he cares about, especially Sienna. With his dark hair and blue eyes, Brant Daugherty from Pretty Little Liars would make a great Trey.

4) Colonel Radcliffe: This is the man who intercepted the exchange of a stolen computer chip and is now hell-bent on making Sienna suffer. Neal McDonough does an outstanding job as a villain on Arrow. He would be the perfect actor to play my villain, Radcliffe.

5) Chaz: Sienna's best friend is an all-star hacker, helping her break into the most secure locations. Kenan Thompson from SNL would make a perfect Chaz, especially with that smile of his! Such a cutie!

6) Curly (aka Jeb): Curly is a member of the Fringe and provides some great comic relief at times. He has dark curls that flop in his face, earning him the nickname Curly (thanks to Sienna). Nick Jonas (the younger version sporting the curls) would be perfect to play the role of Curly.

7) Trina: Once Sienna joins the Fringe, Trina helps look out for her, thus creating Sienna's first true friendship with another girl. Trina is fun, daring, and not afraid to use her "assets" to get what she wants. Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead would be an awesome Trina.

So what do you think? Does it sound like an all-star cast of characters? Do you agree with my choices?

Thanks so much for stopping by!

EXCERPT:

You like to go fast, dont you?I ask with a grin.

She rolls her eyes. I own a motorcycle. What do you think?

I look pointedly at her seat belt. Then youd better buckle up.

Once her belt is snapped into place, I put the car in gear and take off down the Gateway. Its such a long, straight strip of road that its perfect for gaining high speeds. Sienna squeals and throws her head back, and for a second, I get a glimpse of the carefree girl she probably once was. Before her father died, before all that crap went down with Radcliffe, before she met Trey.

Im not too worried about Enforcers, mostly because they dont come around the Gateway until their nightly round up. We have the entire street to ourselves. We speed past towering casinos and tiny chapels. The faster I drive, the wind whipping through Siennas short hair, the deeper her smile, and the lighter her laugh.

Its only the two of us. And a car fast enough to make her forget. As I drive, my only hope is that if she wants to remember, shell try to remember this. Me. Us.

When we get to the end of the Gateway, she turns to me and says with a wide smile, Lets do it again.

So we do.

Too pretty. Too smart. Too perfect.

In a crumbling, futuristic Las Vegas where the wealthy choose the characteristics of their children like ordering off a drive-thru menu, seventeen-year-old Sienna Preston doesn’t fit in. As a normal girl surrounded by genetically modified teenagers, all of her imperfections are on display. But after the death of her father, everything she’s ever known and loved changes in an instant.

With little skills to help provide for her family, Sienna clings to the two things that come easily—lying and stealing. But not all thief-for-hire assignments go as planned. When a covert exchange of a stolen computer chip is intercepted, she becomes entangled with a corrupt government official who uses her thieving past as leverage, her mother as collateral, and the genetically modified poster boy she’s falling for as bait.

In order to rescue her mother, there may only be one option—joining forces with the Fringe, an extremist group, and their young leader who’s too hot to be bad. Problem is, these revolutionaries aren’t what they seem, and the secrets they’re hiding could be more dangerous than Sienna is prepared for. In the end, she must be willing to risk everything to save the one thing that matters most.
